The architectural appearance of St. Petersburg is shaped primarily by buildings with façades finished with plaster mortars. This type of finish requires particular attention, as emerging defects in the coating develop rapidly and can lead to serious damage to the building envelope and pose a risk of plaster collapse. This paper examines the causes and demonstrates the main mechanisms of plaster failure in historic buildings located in the central districts of St. Petersburg. Recommendations for eliminating damage to the plaster façades of stone buildings are also provided, and are applicable to other populated areas of the Russian Federation.
