This article examines the insufficient number of urban recreational areas in Volgograd. A solution to this problem could be to increase recreational spaces through the high-quality development of ravine-and-gully areas (VBA). Based on an analysis of international experience, the main trends in the formation of public spaces in VBA cities are identified. The role of such areas in the urban development of Volgograd and their influence on its planning structure are analyzed. Using Volgograd as an example, key principles for organizing the system of recreational public spaces in VBA into a unified recreational urban framework are formulated and illustrated. Stages of design development and recommendations for the formation of recreational public spaces in VBA are proposed. An analysis of the existing landscape and urban planning structure of Volgograd is presented, based on which two architectural and urban planning concepts for recreational public spaces in VBA are developed to illustrate these principles. These concepts represent areas with the greatest and least anthropogenic impact.
