Abstract

This article addresses the sociological study of the social needs of city residents. It explores the problematic of needs in the social sciences and humanities, focusing on the analysis of social needs in the urban context. Four types of social needs are identified: the need for others, the need for identity, group needs of city residents, and the need for justice. This division necessitates clarifying the relationship between needs and the actual environment in which they are realized. Urban environmental quality indices and the social needs of city residents are examined. The identified characteristics of city residents' social needs enable the development of a methodology for surveying social needs. The need for intelligent tools for identifying the social needs of Russian city residents for monitoring urban development issues is substantiated.
